This quotation is credited to Pastor Martin Niemöller,
although, according to both the
U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and Wikipedia,
there is uncertainty as to when it was first used.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out
because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out
because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Today, the terms Socialists, Trade Unionists and Jews
could easily be replaced with Gays, Blacks, Asians, Muslims
or any of a multitude of other groups of "different" people.

Most people in this world truly don't want to see a
gay person be attacked, for no other reason than that
they are gay, anymore than they would want to see a
black person being attacked simply because they are black.

Unfortunately, when the majority of us keep silent,
the minority believes they are the majority.
